APRIL LISTENING

ROB GREEN - BLUE.
This guy has been dubbed as Nottingham's soul-pop prince and this new track is quite something. The music video is great too, you can watch it here (nice cameo from Joe Dempsie too). Do you know what it reminds me of now I come to think of it? Kings of Leon's Pick Up Truck. The chorus would mash up well with that. Someone make that a thing.

CIGARETTES AFTER SEX - AFFECTION.
How is this brand new material to my ears? How have I not listened to this band before? Sad slow indie music?? With romantic pining lyrics? That's my favourite combination. That's my jam. I'm super impressed and have been listening to their EP a lot recently. Think kind of a more ambient/laid-back The National with vocals similar to Swim Deep. Kind of.

CATFISH AND THE BOTTLEMEN - 7.
New Catfish track is a little bit cute isn't it. It's got a lovely tune and even sweeter lyrics. I had the absolute pleasure of seeing these guys at the beginning of the month and the energy in their set was incredible. I'd been listening to the acoustic version of this track on repeat before the official version was released on R1 with Annie Mac the other day. I'd beg you but you know I'm never home/And I love you but I need another year alone. Dead sweet. I think in a Northern accent when I think about Catfish, it's a bit weird.

THE LAST SHADOW PUPPETS - USED TO BE MY GIRL.
The tune has a rolling and punching melody, but it's the lyrics that really sell it. I've said it before & I'll say it again, Alex Turner is truly the best lyricist of our time in me 'umble opinion. I'm a phoney, I'm a fake, a fraud, a snake/Gimme all your love so I can fill you up with hate. Nice. Also 'Sweet Dreams, TN' about his girlfriend is literally so cute. Too much exposure to Kylie Jenner has got me saying so cute like it's actually an acceptable phrase. LIKE, LITERALLY, SO CUTE. Shut up. This song is fun. I'm looking forward to seeing them this summer. That is all.

THE JAPANESE HOUSE - COOL BLUE.
This mysterious and dreamy solo act from London sings with such a sweet sincerity. Her EP Clean is experimental/ambient music backing woeful lyrics: right up my street.

TINIE TEMPAH - GIRLS LIKE.
This fits into that category of songs that you struggle through the crappy chorus just for the verses. The hook is really not very good at all but the rap is pop PERFECTION. I love it. My love affair with Tinie continues. Tell JK that I'm still rolling/Tell Russell I'm a brand. Modern Shakespeare.

MY MORNING JACKET - ONLY MEMORIES REMAIN.
I'm a sucker for a great baseline, I really am. This track definitely ticks that box - as well as the boxes for a killer combination of almost country fused with psychedelic rock and their superb use of repetition could be likened to that of Spiritualized. Frontman Jim James also features on The New Basement Tapes, which I'm a fan of too.

EXPLOSIONS IN THE SKY - HELLO, IS THIS YOUR HOUSE.
This track was a collaboration between the post-rock band and composer David Wingo released for a movie soundtrack. Most of the band's music is instrumental anyway so it requires little attention and I have been loving it as background music to revise to. (I say revise, but what I really mean is play Can You Get 11? relentlessly.)

Happy May y'all. May it bring you only good things, good times & good music.
